Nature parks have been a great escape for many of us in Singapore during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here, Arman Shah explores Woodlands Waterfront and captures a slice of life at the coastal park.
Those living in north-western Singapore are not unfamiliar with Woodlands Waterfront. Overlooking the Straits of Johor, this coastal park offers tranquil views of the sea that separates the city-state from its neighbouring country of Malaysia.
From Woodlands Waterfront, the Johor-Singapore Causeway – acting as a linkway between both countries – looks hauntingly abandoned and empty as both sides are yet to re-open their land checkpoints due to COVID-19 concerns.
Nonetheless, the 11-hectare park still serves as a great spot for recreational activities. Featuring a 1.5km-long waterfront promenade, it attracts cyclists and joggers looking to clock in some exercise and break some sweat.
Those looking to enjoy a leisurely morning or evening stroll can also enjoy the flora and fauna found here. Keep your eyes peeled and you might even spot fascinating wildlife that ranges from birds and squirrels to snails and crabs.
You might even spot wild monkeys that predominantly inhabit Admiralty Park that’s linked to Woodlands Waterfront via the Northern Explorer Loop. Be sure to remember not to feed them even if you love animals!
What gets shutterbugs truly excited about this coastal park, however, is the jetty. 400m in length, this ex-navy jetty sees a great variety of recreational activities and community events, from picnics to romantic dates.
If you’re looking for a place to dine with friends and family, there’s Rasa Istimewa Waterfront Restaurant. This Halal-certified restaurant serves delightful seafood dishes like salted egg prawn and chilli crab.
One of the best times to visit the waterfront is during sunset. The sun looks like a majestic orb descending into the horizon, casting a lovely orange light on the jetty and its visitors who take in the stunning view as they breathe in the refreshing sea breeze.
Note: The playground and fitness area in Woodlands Waterfront Park are closed for improvement works until 31 December 2020
