GE2020 Wrap-Up: 50 Photos of a Singaporean Election Like No Other

In part two of our coverage from the campaign trail, Kurt Ganapathy headed to Ang Mo Kio, Bukit Batok, Hougang, Jurong, Pasir Ris, Punggol, Sembawang, Sengkang and Toa Payoh.

The voters have spoken, and Singapore will see a Parliament unlike any other in the country’s history.

While the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) received a commanding mandate with a vote share of 61.24%, winning 83 out of 93 seats, the Workers’ Party (WP) could also claim a victory.

The WP retained their six seats in Aljunied and Hougang and – in the night’s most stunning result – picked up four seats via the new group representation constituency (GRC) of Sengkang.

The PAP’s results would be regarded as a landslide in any other democratic country, but the 10 seats secured by the WP are the most won by opposition parties here since independence. With that showing, WP chief Pritam Singh is set to be formally appointed as the Leader of the Opposition.

The Progress Singapore Party (PSP) also performed admirably in their first election, with their narrow loss in West Coast GRC allowing them to take up two Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) seats.

The Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), too, fared well, with Dr Chee Soon Juan and Dr Paul Tambyah both garnering more than 45% of the vote in the single-member constituencies (SMCs) of Bukit Batok and Bukit Panjang respectively.

In our first story on GE2020, we covered six parties, but there were still five left to report on – the National Solidarity Party (NSP), Peoples Voice (PV), Red Dot United (RDU), the Reform Party (RP) and the Singapore People’s Party (SPP) – so week two of election season saw us travelling to more of Singapore’s far-flung corners.

After just over 500km on the road, passing through 14 constituencies and meeting people from 11 parties, we’ve seen the best of Singapore. And we’ve seen plenty of hope for a brighter future for this place we call home.
