Checkpoint Theatre announces a stellar 2025 season anchored by industry heavyweights, beginning with a new play by Myle Yan Tay following his sold-out debut work Brown Boys Don’t Tell Jokes (2023).

Statement Piece, a nuanced and riveting exploration of the purpose of art in Singapore, runs from 3 to 13 April 2025 at the Drama Centre Black Box.

An up-and-coming art gallerist prepares for her first exhibition, weeks after an incident of national and international import. Having made innumerable personal sacrifices and faced countless professional challenges to get to this point, all that’s left to complete her glorious debut is the final painting.

This painting, when delivered by the artist himself, sends her into a frenzied panic. Any attempts from her artist girlfriend to offer alternative perspectives or solutions are cold comfort.

This daring new play brings the best of Myle Yan Tay’s unsparing wit and deep
insight on ambition, legacy, and art to the local stage.

“While studying in Chicago, I was spending a lot of time with American artists and having conversations about freedom of speech, the ethics of representation, and the peculiar challenges of being an artist in our era,” says playwright and Checkpoint Theatre Associate Artist Yan.

“I’d share Singapore idiosyncrasies with my peers: about art making, but also other oddities, like our veneration of public figures. These ideas eventually took root and led to Statement Piece.”

Visionary veteran director Claire Wong adeptly leads actors Huzir Sulaiman, Rusydina Afiqah, and Tricia Tan in this powerful play with her signature delicacy and confidence. Huzir Sulaiman’s keen sensitivity is also infused into the piece through his incisive dramaturgy of this striking work that examines the intersections between choices, beliefs, and hopes.
