Deepavali (or Diwali) is the most important festival in the Hindu calendar. Also referred to as the Festival of Lights, it’s a celebration of good’s triumph over evil and light conquering darkness. In Singapore, it’s celebrated as a public holiday.

Leading up to this annual cultural affair, Hindu families thoroughly clean their living spaces and decorate their homes with flowers and vibrant ornaments. Rangoli – beautiful and colourful patterns made with rice, flowers and powders – can be seen on their floors.

The local Hindu community dress up in colourful traditional attires and visit temples for prayers and other religious rituals on Deepavali. At home, clay oil lamps are lit and traditional snacks and mouthwatering dishes are served to family members and guests.
