What is Good Friday about?

Good Friday is one of the most important observances in Christianity. It is a solemn, holy day that commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus. It is held on the Friday before Easter Sunday that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus.

Jesus Christ was put on trial and crucified after declaring himself the Son of God and King of the Jews. Christians believe that his death was his sacrifice to redeem humanity’s sins.

Good Friday is also known as Great Friday, Holy Friday, Black Friday or Friday of the Passion of the Lord. In Singapore, it is a designated public holiday.

What practices can be observed during Good Friday? 

Church services

In Singapore, Good Friday is commonly marked by church services, solemn reflection and acts of charity. Christians and Catholics may also choose to fast or abstain from certain foods and activities during the period of Lent.

Lent

Lent is a 40-day period of spiritual preparation for Easter Sunday. All Fridays during Lent (including Good Friday) are days of abstinence from meat in commemoration of Jesus’ sacrifice.
