What is it about?

The Istana Open House is one of Singapore’s most unique public events, where the grounds of The Istana—the official residence and office of the President of Singapore—are opened to the public. Since it is normally closed for official state functions, these open houses offer a rare opportunity to explore the historic estate.

When is it held?

The Istana usually opens up to five times a year, often in conjunction with major national or cultural celebrations such as Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, Labour Day, National Day and Deepavali.

The next Istana Open House will be held on 26 July 2026.

What can you do there?

A visit is much more than simply walking through the gates. Visitors can:

  • Wander around the expansive 40-hectare grounds, which are home to beautiful lawns, heritage trees and abundant wildlife.
  • Visit the Istana Villa, where a collection of State Gifts presented to Singapore’s leaders is displayed.
  • Join a guided heritage tour to learn about the Istana’s architecture and its role in Singapore’s history.
  • Enjoy live cultural performances, music, and dance by various schools and community groups.
  • Participate in family-friendly workshops, activity booths and seasonal experiences depending on the event.

Is it free?

  • For Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents, admission to The Istana grounds is free.
  • International visitors pay an admission fee, while optional experiences such as the Istana Villa and guided heritage tours, have small charges.
  • Importantly, all proceeds support the President’s Challenge, a national charity initiative.

Why is it so special?

The Istana isn’t just a grand building—it has been at the heart of Singapore’s story for over 150 years. Built in 1869 as the residence of the British Governor, it later became the official residence of Singapore’s Head of State after independence.

During an Open House, you’re walking through grounds where presidents have hosted world leaders, national celebrations and important state ceremonies.
