What Is Music for Comfort?
《心安 · Music for Comfort》 is an immersive concert experience that explores how music, visual art and guided reflection can create opportunities for calm and emotional connection.
The Chinese title 心安 conveys a sense of peace and reassurance, reflecting the concert’s emphasis on slowing down and finding moments of stillness.
Created by The TENG Company, the programme draws on music from its Music for Comfort album, which was developed with the support of Direct Funeral Services.
The album explores music as a means of offering comfort and supporting emotional reflection, particularly in relation to grief, loss and personal experiences.
For the live concert, these musical ideas are brought into an immersive environment through performances, digital projections and guided reflection.
The experience follows TENG’s earlier immersive wellness concert, 《五行 Wuxing, The Five Elements》, which also explored the relationship between music and wellbeing.
Live Music, Guided Reflection and Digital Art
Original Music by The TENG Ensemble
The TENG Ensemble is known for reimagining Chinese instrumental music through contemporary compositions and collaborations across artistic disciplines.
At Music for Comfort, the ensemble will perform selections from its original album, allowing audiences to experience the music in a live setting.
Instead of focusing solely on technical virtuosity, the concert places particular emphasis on atmosphere, attentive listening and the emotional qualities of the compositions.
Guided Reflection with Stanley Lim and Jeanette Chan
Wellness practitioner Stanley Lim and art therapist Jeanette Chan contribute guided elements intended to help audiences settle into the experience and reflect inwardly.
Their involvement adds a participatory dimension to the concert, encouraging visitors to approach the music as an opportunity for reflection rather than passive entertainment alone.
Digital Art by Brian Gothong Tan
Singaporean artist Brian Gothong Tan contributes digital art projections that form part of the concert’s immersive environment.
Known for his work across film, theatre and multimedia art, Brian brings a visual dimension to the experience, complementing the musical programme with imagery designed to support its reflective atmosphere.
How Does Music for Comfort Use Monaural Beats?
One of the distinctive elements of Music for Comfort is its use of monaural beats, a sound technique involving tones of slightly different frequencies combined to produce a perceived rhythmic effect.
The TENG Company has explored the potential of monaural beats in its wider research and creative work involving music and mindfulness.
In the context of this concert, the technique contributes to a carefully designed listening environment intended to encourage calm and reflection.
Research into sound-based approaches to wellbeing continues to develop, and individual responses can vary. Music for Comfort should therefore be understood as an artistic wellness experience rather than a medical treatment or a substitute for professional mental health support.
About The TENG Company
The TENG Company is a Singapore-based not-for-profit arts organisation that explores new possibilities for Chinese music through performance, education, artistic innovation and community programmes.
Its work includes contemporary interpretations of traditional Chinese music alongside initiatives connecting music with social impact and wellbeing.
Through its Music for Wellness programmes, TENG has explored ways of using music to support reflection, emotional connection and community engagement.
Music for Comfort continues that direction by bringing together musicians, wellness practitioners and visual artists in a single concert experience.
Our Take
In a city where so much of everyday life revolves around schedules, responsibilities and constant activity, the idea of attending a concert simply to slow down feels especially relevant.
What makes Music for Comfort interesting is its approach to live performance. Rather than treating music, visual art and reflection as separate experiences, the concert brings them together with the intention of creating a shared atmosphere of calm.
We also appreciate that the programme places Singaporean artistic talent at its centre, with contributions from The TENG Ensemble, Brian Gothong Tan and practitioners working across the arts and wellness fields.
Of course, no concert can promise that every audience member will experience the same emotional response. The value of an experience like this may lie in giving people the space to pause, listen and reflect in their own way.
For those interested in music, mindfulness or unconventional live performances, Music for Comfort offers a different way to spend a Sunday afternoon or evening in Singapore.
