Chinatown is creating a new Mid-Autumn tradition in 2026, replacing its customary large street installations with community-built lantern displays, handwritten blessings and a celebratory procession through Kreta Ayer.

For the first time in 24 years, the Chinatown Mid-Autumn Festival will not feature large-format lantern decorations along Eu Tong Sen Street and New Bridge Road.

Instead, the 2026 celebration places residents and visitors at the centre of the festival. From 11 September to 4 October 2026, participants can write personal well-wishes on lanterns at designated booths before seeing them progressively added to displays at Kreta Ayer Square and Banda Street.

The festival’s headline celebration, Light a Lantern, Share Your Blessing, takes place at 6pm on 19 September. The evening combines a community lantern procession with mooncake and tea appreciation, traditional riddles and cultural activities.

Highlights of Chinatown Mid-Autumn Festival 2026

Create a Community Lantern: Write a personal wish or blessing on a lantern at participating booths in Kreta Ayer Community Club and selected grassroots events.

What Has Changed in Chinatown This Year?

Visitors should not arrive expecting the enormous overhead lanterns and illuminated centrepieces that previously transformed Chinatown’s main roads. The Chinatown Festival Committee has confirmed that those large-format installations will not be presented for Mid-Autumn Festival 2026.

Festival Committee Chairman Peh Cheng Hoo explained that similar large installations have become increasingly common at major attractions around Singapore. The committee is therefore shifting its Mid-Autumn celebration towards local participation and community connections.

Large street lanterns will continue to be used for Chinatown’s Chinese New Year celebrations. This change presently applies to the 2026 Mid-Autumn programme.

Our Take

The disappearance of Chinatown’s enormous street lanterns may disappoint visitors who associate the festival with dramatic photographs along Eu Tong Sen Street. However, the new format offers something that a large decorative installation cannot: the opportunity for residents and visitors to contribute directly to the celebration.

Watching a display grow through hundreds of handwritten wishes feels appropriately connected to Mid-Autumn Festival’s central themes of reunion, gratitude and community. The lanterns may be smaller this year, but their personal meaning could be considerably greater.

Families seeking the most complete experience should visit on 19 September for the procession and accompanying activities. Those primarily looking for large-scale illuminated installations can consider Lights by the Lake at Jurong Lake Gardens or the Mid-Autumn programme at Gardens by the Bay instead.
