Description

Discover the personal story behind Singapore’s founding years in Moonlit City, an English-language musical exploring the enduring relationship between Lee Kuan Yew and Kwa Geok Choo.

Running at Victoria Theatre from 14 to 30 August 2026, the Toy Factory Productions musical looks beyond political milestones to examine the love, sacrifice and quiet partnership that supported the couple through Singapore’s formative years.

The 2026 production follows Moonlit City’s Mandarin-language debut in 2025, which welcomed more than 7,000 audience members. Rather than presenting a direct English translation, Toy Factory has reworked the musical with rewritten scenes, refined dialogue, refreshed musical arrangements, new costumes, enhanced scenic design and an expanded cast.

Cast and direction

Acclaimed Singaporean baritone and opera singer Alvin Julian Tan takes on the role of Lee Kuan Yew, opposite Sunny Yang, who reprises her portrayal of Kwa Geok Choo from the original production. Joel Low appears as Lee Hsien Loong, with Mabel Yeo, Misha Paule Tan and Katherine Tang returning alongside new ensemble members.

Directed by Toy Factory Chief Artistic Director and Cultural Medallion recipient Goh Boon Teck, Moonlit City foregrounds the private moments, emotional resilience and personal sacrifices behind Singapore’s nation-building story.

Music

The musical features well-known songs by Singapore composer Tan Kah Beng, newly adapted into English for the stage. Audiences will hear reimagined versions of Moonlight in the City, The Sun After the Rain, Regret, Aroma and Midnight Arrival, together with other songs from the composer’s catalogue.

Music director Benny Wong has also created a new original song, One Mountain, Two Tigers, especially for the English-language production.

Presented by PropNex and produced by Toy Factory Productions, Moonlit City offers audiences a human portrait of two significant figures in Singapore’s history—and of a partnership shaped by love, loyalty, responsibility and national change.
